Letter from Cheryl after assisting at the Clicker Class where Eugenie taught “down”! Hi Eugenie, This story is a typical case of "Slap the Handler and praise the Dog"........... Doug (husband) has been taking our Sibe, Kai, 12 weeks old to puppy classes. After 4 lessons Kai still wouldn’t down even with a lure of liver cake!. Yesterday evening I slap myself on the head and thought "Why don’t you use the clicker on him?" 3 minutes later Kai could down. The recipe was so easy........30 seconds to condition him to the clicker, 2 1/2 minutes to teach him to down. The behaviour was shaped right from scratch i.e. if his eyes looked down he got a click and treat then when his head moved slightly down click and treat etc. He is now downing on hand command with me standing up straight. Tonight we’re moving onto verbal command only YES YES I know the rules - new command first then the old one 10-20 times then try on new command only give 20 seconds etc . PS: Just ’cos we had so much fun I taught Kai to target last night as well!
